I took this photo from the lookout over Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island. It’s an ever-changing seascape that responds and adapts to the meteorological conditions it is exposed to.
Similarly, our brain is an ever-changing network of neurons that respond and adapt to the internal and external environments they’re exposed to. By internal environment, I’m referring to our thoughts, emotions, beliefs and expectations. Our external environment includes the food we eat, activities we engage in, people we interact with, microorganisms we harbour, and toxins we come into contact with.
Examples of a harmful internal environment are fearful, distressing thoughts and self-limiting beliefs. A brain-boosting internal environment is fostered by feeling grateful, optimistic, curious and joyful. A healthful external environment is engendered by eating whole real food, engaging in daily physical exercise, and cultivating uplifting nurturing relationships.
