A Christmas rhyme for a jolly good time!

I took this photo a few weeks ago when I presented at the Videri Rementia Retreat in Wamberal, NSW. Rementia is a composite of the words ‘remember’ and ‘dementia’ to emphasise that the goal of the retreat is to help people preserve their capacity to remember.

The flower is Magnolia grandiflora, nicknamed Magnolia ‘Teddy Bear’. I was absolutely awestruck by its delicate beauty. Magnolias are symbolic of dignity, strength and deep appreciation for nature. They also signify everlasting connections, with specific meanings varying by colour and culture.  White magnolias are a reminder to live fully. I felt these were uplifting messages to close the year.

And here’s a Christmas rhyme for a jolly good time.

It’s that time of year when the sun grows bold,
And the beach is so hot, your feet want to explode.

Even gum trees feel festive in their eucalyptus way,
And magpies judge harshly what you’re wearing today.

Christmas Down Under lacks snow and chill,
But rest assured, our summers are a thrill.

The weather, like the BBQ, is sizzling and loud,
And cicadas perform like they’re singing to a crowd.

So what do you appreciate at this time of year?
What will you do to bring yourself cheer?

Take a walk near the water where the salty breeze plays?
Or wander through the bush on long summer days?

Let awe overcome you as sunlight turns gold,
Or as shadows dance softly on trails that unfold.

Give yourself sleep that’s long and deep,
So you wake like a human, not a crumpled old heap.

Reflect on things you feel grateful for —
The warmth of connection, the time to explore.

Be grateful for laughter that sneaks up on you,
And for people who care in ways deep and true.

Share meals, share stories, share long easy days,
Share comfort and kindness in warm summer ways.

Let awe be your guide as the holidays flow,
Let beauty surprise you wherever you go.

Let joy wrap around you like soft evening air,
A reminder that magic is already there.

If the year has been heavy with sorrow or strain,
If your heart has burdens, or your body holds pain,

May you honour each feeling that rises and stays,
And care for yourself in the gentlest of ways.

There’s no need to force or push hurt aside,
Your truth is allowed, and your feelings are your guide.

May comfort find you, where you quietly stand,
And healing arrive with a warm, open hand.

And a heartfelt thank you from me to you
For your keen support of all that I do.

Wishing you excellent health and great cheer,
And a wonderful start to a brand new year.
