Your brain is they key to achieving lasting weight loss, says Dr Helena Popovic.
The power of the human mind is amazing – and Dr Helena Popovic is helping people understand how the brain can assist with shedding excess body fat.
THE power of the human mind can drive changes in our body, and Helena Popovic is helping people understand how their brain can help them lose weight.
Dr Popovic, a leading authority on improving brain function and author of NeuroSlimming, explains how people can rewire their brain to reshape their body. ‘Our decisions are more powerful than our DNA,’ she says. ‘You can train your brain to shed excess body fat.’
She will share her knowledge of the mind with Tasmanians at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens this coming weekend.
Dr Popovic, who wanted to help others after battling her own eating disorder, said that one of the main triggers for being overweight was ‘non-hungry eating’.
“It’s not about what you eat, it’s about why, how and when you eat,” Dr Popovic said.
“When you’re in a stressed state, your body deposits fat around your abdomen … due to the hormone cortisol.”
“But if you eat in a positive mindset you metabolise foods better. I teach people to retrain their brain so they only eat when they’re hungry – not when they’re sad, angry, bored or lonely.”
Dr Popovic added that not eating for 12 hours after dinner can help with detoxification, which is best achieved during sleep.
The list of factors that harm the brain include: smoking, stress, sleep deprivation, soft drinks, sedentary lifestyles, excessive alcohol, junk food, high blood pressure, loneliness, pessimism and negative self-talk.
Dr Popovic’s retreat will be held at the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens on October 28 and 29.
